DIY Concrete Slab Checklist
Plan forms, base prep, reinforcement, tools, ordering, pouring, finishing, and curing before a small concrete slab project.

Prepare the base first
A slab is only as good as the ground below it. Plan excavation, compacted gravel, drainage, form height, and finished slope before ordering concrete.
Decide on reinforcement and joints
Some slabs need wire mesh, rebar, fiber mix, control joints, or thicker edges. The right choice depends on load, soil, size, and local practice.
Have tools ready before concrete arrives
Forms, stakes, screws, level, screed board, shovel, rake, float, edger, broom, gloves, boots, and curing materials should be ready before mixing or delivery starts.
Plan finishing and curing
Concrete work does not end when the forms are full. Finishing timing, weather, protection, curing, and when to remove forms all affect the finished slab.
Planning checklist
Before you make the final plan
- Confirm the project footprint, site access, and any local rules before buying materials.
- Estimate the core materials first, then add a buffer for hardware, delivery, tools, and waste.
- Check foundation, drainage, durability, and maintenance needs before choosing a final plan.
- Use calculator results as a starting budget, then compare with local material prices.
