Mulch Calculator by Area
Estimate mulch for common bed areas and understand how square footage, depth, bags, and cubic yards connect.

Turn area into volume
If you already know square footage, multiply that area by mulch depth in feet. For example, 3 inches is 0.25 feet.
Compare bags and bulk
Small beds may be simple with 2 or 3 cubic foot bags. Larger areas may be cheaper with bulk mulch sold by the cubic yard.
Depth drives the estimate
A 2 inch refresh and a 3 inch new layer can differ by a large amount. Pick the target finished depth before buying.
Leave space around plants
Keep mulch pulled back from trunks, stems, siding, and wood structures. The goal is even coverage, not deep piles against sensitive areas.
Planning checklist
Before you make the final plan
- Measure the actual bed length, width, and depth before buying materials.
- Compare bagged materials with bulk delivery if the project is larger than one small bed.
- Plan for settling, drainage, compost, mulch, and access around the bed.
- Use calculator results as a baseline, then adjust for plant type and local conditions.
