Measure each wall
Add the area of all bedroom walls. You can subtract large windows, closet doors, or openings for a tighter estimate, but a rough estimate can use total wall area.
Choose one or two coats
One coat may work for a similar color in good condition. Two coats are safer for color changes, patched walls, or uneven existing paint.
Check the paint label
Coverage varies by product and surface. Many interior paints list a range such as 300 to 400 square feet per gallon.
Round up before buying
Paint is usually bought in whole gallons or quarts. Rounding up helps avoid stopping mid-room or having a slight color mismatch later.
Planning checklist
Before you make the final plan
- Measure the real surfaces you plan to paint, including walls, trim, doors, and repaired areas separately.
- Check product coverage, dry time, sheen, primer needs, and surface preparation before buying.
- Plan supplies such as tape, rollers, brushes, trays, drop cloths, sanding blocks, and cleanup materials.
- Use calculator results as a planning baseline, then compare with the label on the exact paint you choose.
